Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids come to school eager and ready to make the most of every day. They come from all continents trying to find a safer place in this world. Many speak no English whatsoever.
I know that my job is to make a positive starting point for a lot of children who come from some challenging circumstances.
My school receives Title I funding for all of our students, with 100% receiving free lunch. Their courage inspires me to provide them with all the resources possible to be able to make connections they can internalize, leaving them with a better sense of security in their new home. I feel committed to doing everything in my power to help these children adapt and make wonderful memories.
My Project
A recent workshop enlightened me to the importance of developing a strong foundation in phonemic awareness, and in phonics, to give a child the best opportunity in becoming a more successful reader, writer, and speller. I learned that there is indeed a process through which students need to follow in order to embed words, and their spelling patterns into their brains. If the process is followed correctly the capacity for this is increased thus establishing a more solid foundation in literacy. When students are given opportunities to establish word patterns through a variety of exercises, and techniques they are helping their brains maintain the information permanently, which would then allow them to transfer this into their reading, writing, and spelling.
Dyslexia is a brain based process which, in some cases, can be supported and improved with the appropriate supports.
These materials will help do just that. Having the appropriate materials to provide opportunities where students have a lot of hands on interactions with letters, and writing will help them organize the patterns of letters and words so they become embedded in their memory thus helping them as readers and writers.
