This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can we improve our students' comprehension across all contents? Get them to become voracious readers. Yet sadly most literary curriculum use books that are too difficult for many of my reading intervention students, so they fall farther behind each year. 99% of my students are first-gen Latino-Americans in a community where only 2% of the adult population holds a college degree. Students report having 0-3 books at home, and never having shopped for a book. Teach them to love reading.

My Project

These high-interest novels will have students embark on their first, for many, POSITIVE reading experience.

Studies show that incredible cognitive gains occur when students read a million words in a year.

In order to improve their Reading (Lexile) level by grades in 9 months my students are expected to read 20-30 minutes every day of the week at home, including the 25 minute reading that's done in class. I am instilling a culture of reading and these books allow for the student selection necessary to foster literacy. These books are selected because they serve the Lexile range for the majority of my students 650-900.

These students are only beginning to learn that reading can be fun and I need books that they will not want to put down!
