Our classroom is the closest thing our high school has to a library, and this course is committed to improving our reading scores by at least two grade levels in the span of 9th months? How do we do that? By HIGH volumes of reading. Students select books that are within their reading abilities (differentiated by Lexile) and must read 20-30 minutes outside of class every single day of the week, Monday-Sunday including holidays. This causes us to have a HIGH book turn-over rate, so I need MANY high-interest books. Students come into the class telling me that they think reading is boring and that it is not something they do for fun - this masks the fact that for most of my students, reading is a challenge, scoring below grade level. I intend to change that by providing books that they can fall in love with, to begin the habit of voracious reading that will last a life time.
