My students come from a high poverty low-income city. They come from all over the city of Bridgeport and all receive free breakfast, lunch and a snack.
My students all have special needs, with the majority being on the autism spectrum. This year I have 10 students in the Kindergarten and 1st grade.
The majority of the students are transitioning from a 1/2 day pre-school program into a full-day Kindergarten program at a new school. Transitioning into a new larger school on top of having autism can be overwhelming and make it a very difficult transition.
My goal in working with these students is to make this transition as smooth as possible, assist them in building friendships, engage in learning, and motivate them to come to school daily ready to learn!
My Project
My students are students with autism that have great difficulties staying engaged long enough to learn new skills and materials. They all have sensory needs and prefer hands on materials like puzzles to learn new materials.
Allowing my students to learn the alphabet and numbers by using tactile numbers and alphabet matching puzzles are just one way to keep them motivated and learning while addressing their sensory needs.
Puzzles in general are a good way to reinforce their learning. They will use these materials during their learning stations to increase their learning skills.
