My Students

Three of the ten highest-circulating books in our school library are from Dev Pilkey's 'Captain Underpants' series. Now: stop and think for a moment. What do the most popular books in a kids' library look like? That's right: our 'Underpants' are in tatters!

That's pretty inevitable, when kids fall in love with a book series.

The students at our K-8 Center adore 'Captain Underpants,' particularly the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. That's around 300 kids. Before I tell you more about the books, a word or two about our school. It is a K-8 center, as you know, which means that it caters for kids from four to fourteen. It is situated in South Florida, by the coast. Sound glamorous? Think again. Around 85% of our kids come from homes with incomes so low, that the kids receive free / reduced lunch. In fact, our school is classified as 'Title 1,' which means that it is in an area of high poverty. Our parents tend to be immigrants with low-paying jobs in the tourism industry. Our families come from the Caribbean, and Central and South America, so our students tend to learn English here at school. Their families' income and background means that not many English-language books are available at home. That's why our school library is so important.

My Project

So - why do the kids like 'Captain Underpants' so much? Here are just three titles. Let's see if they interest the grade schooler in you. 'Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman'; 'Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets' and 'Captain Underpants and the Revolting Revenge of the Radioactive Robo-Boxers'. You get the picture. 'Captain Underpants' is a school Principal who has been hypnotized by two of his students into thinking that he is a superhero. Whenever those two students cause mayhem in the school, the Principal strips down to his underpants, dons a cape, and rushes off to somehow save the day, despite himself. No, it is not Shakespeare - unless you are around 8, 9 or 10 years old! 'Captain Underpants' is the creation of Dev Pilkey: we'd like to acquire 20 new 'Captain Underpants' books and 8 stories about other Dev Pilkey creations: 'Super Diaper Baby', 'Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot' and 'Ook and Glook, Cavemen from the Future'.

Why bother with 'Captain Underpants'?

Because he really is a superhero. He gets our kids READING. That's a proven fact. Remember those circulation statistics. Remember why our 'Underpants' are all frayed! (I wish I could include a photo of the books. You wouldn't believe how the kids still manage to read them). Please back a proven winner, and motivate hundreds of kids to read, by buying our school library a fresh set of these amazing books.
