Our Town: Chicago's Progression Over Time

My students need 30+ books that contain fascinating facts and features to explore through reading,research and to help create a cumulative project about our unique city.

My Students

Do you know where the name "Chicago" came from? What happened during the worst disaster in Chicago's history? My students will learn these facts and more as we journey through literature, on-line resources and visit Chicago's Museums to examine the progression of Chicago over time.

My students are young children growing up in an urban setting often experiencing the negative aspects of our great city.

They are eager to learn, excited, and possess a strong ability to persevere. Many of them do not venture outside of their own neighborhoods due to fear and violence. Our school is an urban city school where they feel safe, loved, and inspired to be their best.

My Project

I want to inspire my students to think critically and to learn about the city in which they live. I want them to actively engage in researching expository nonfiction and explore Chicago's Museums to examine the progression of Chicago's history, present day and prepare for its future. I want them to understand their own ability to change their communities and make a difference in shaping Chicago's future. They will learn to close read, perform research and analyze literature. They will create a cumulative project ( brochure, booklet,power point,or create a model) that will demonstrate their knowledge of one important event, place or person in Chicago's history.

The donations requested will make a difference by providing the the books we need to help in our exploration and research of Chicago's history.

This will impact my students by allowing them to enhance their reading skills, be creative in demonstrating their knowledge of Chicago, and provide them with a way of learning facts about the city they live in.
