This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in south Los Angeles, we are a Title I campus, and most of students are on free lunch. We have a high percentage of English Language learners within each classroom.
Transitional Kindergarten is such a magical year and I absolutely love teaching it!
The goal of TK is to get kids ready for kindergarten, we focus on prereading and writing skills, number sense, but most importantly social and emotional learning.
Teaching this year virtually is going WAY better than I could have expected, we have had perfect attendance this first month! We are forming friendships and learning so much through zoom.
My Project
Our twice daily zoom meetings are going really well! We have had great attendance and participation. TK students are young and need to see me and what I am doing with my hands at the same time. In the classroom this is easy, on zoom it can be tricky. I learned from other educators that my daughter's OSMO toy and her iPad work great to create a document camera. By airdropping an iPad into our zoom through screen share, students are able to see me draw shapes, write letters, paint and color on paper. I am also able to easily create thinking maps with my students' ideas, just like I would in the classroom.
Discovering this "document camera hack" has made a huge improvement to our zoom meetings and made our learning more visual, which is developmentally appropriate.
Students are able to follow long with me as I write, draw, paint, etc, but it also means I am using my daughter's iPad, pausing her online learning throughout the day.
Having an iPad specifically for our class would continue to allow me to screen share with my students during zooms from home, without disrupting my daughters distance learning. Hopefully we will return to school soon and when we do, this iPad will be useful for them in even more ways by allowing them access to so many great learning apps!
