My students need 5 Kindle Fires, headphones, and headphone splitters to promote collaboration during reading and writing stations.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Take a moment to ponder a few questions: How often do you use your phone? Your tablet? What about your laptop? How do you feel about slow and unreliable technology?
Students love theirs as much as you do, but ours just isn't cutting it!
We come to school every day to a Title I school in a very impoverished Connecticut city.
Our school is a Project Child school. The basis of a CHILD school is that students are able to tailor their own learning. Students belong to a "cluster" of a math, reading, and writing teacher. Students rotate between teachers and participate in stations, or centers, in every class. This allows them to participate in project based learning in a child-centered classroom.
I work with three classes - one first, one second, and one third grade class. Each class has between 20-22 students. Overall, this project will reach about 65 students each day.
My Project
These items will be used in daily stations. Currently, we have access to 4 computers in our classroom. However, these computers are, quite literally, older than the students. One of them only remains on for a couple of hours before it voluntarily shuts off, and all four of them are extremely slow and unreliable. Students get frustrated when the computer does not work well on their learning websites, because they can't handle the speed of the site. The computers are also bulky and dusty. The Kindle Fires would be able to be stored compactly and give us more table space to spread out during station time.
Our headphones are broken with ripped padding. The splitters would allow two students to work together on the same activity. Project Child relies on technology to further its students education. Unfortunately, the technology that we have has been handed down from the middle and high schools as they have received new technology and is close to 10 years old.
Students will be able to collaborate with one another during stations.
We can create digital storybooks and reports as part of our writing curriculum. I am currently bringing in my personal tablet to do this right now, and one device is difficult to split amongst the 20+ kids in each class. We would love to use our time more effectively and productively by spreading the technology out.
