This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have special needs that require teachers to think outside the box with their learning. Communication through words is difficult for them, so they use pictures, sign language, and visual cues to communicate. As a teacher, I need to be able to know how they communicate best.
My students have special needs such as speech impairment, Autism, and severe ADHD.
They live in a low-income area where resources can be limited at home and in the school. In addition, many of their parents are disadvantaged and lack an education. Therefore, building the proper skills at home is limited. They look forward to coming to school each day to socialize with their friends, build on communication, and learn preschool level skills. They enjoy singing, dancing, and being silly during carpet time. They also love sitting and listening to stories read to them.
Many of the students are nonverbal, thus making it difficult to communicate with peers and educators. Some are able to communicate through pictures and gestures. In addition, some are fortunate enough to be able to express themselves with words. For all of my students, visuals are key to their success. My students benefit from a daily schedule that they change during transition from one activity to the next.
My Project
My students enjoy hands-on activities and daily crafts, which is where a color printer would be essential. My fellow teachers and I enjoy making homemade activities for the students to create each day. With the help of a color printer, our students can be provided with these resources each day. We are able to be more creative with their daily activities with access to a color printer.
In addition, we read a different story each day and create a craft that is associated with the book. This helps build on comprehension skills and develops their love for reading. I like to make print-off sequencing visuals to aid in their comprehension during and after reading the story.
The students also benefit from daily schedules and token systems. Some of the children suffer from behavior challenges, which make a behavior chart imperative. We love to implement color pictures of the students and actual pictures from their daily activities. This makes the schedule more real to them.
With the help of generous donors, my students will be able to benefit in multiple ways through having an easily accessible printer.
Through the use of a printer, the students will have access to color visuals that are more stimulating and real to them. Because many of my students are nonverbal, a printer will help provide them with images and visuals that will aid in their communication process. Because spoken words are not an option, their communication will still succeed through visuals.
