Lights, camera, action...now what? In my K-5 classroom, I have a lot of students who want to tell their life stories and who also like to make graphic novels but are not sure how. Many of them have been identified with a disability, and they often feel as if their life stories are silenced. During free play, I have watched these students play out amazing stories using action figures and creations from clay and paper. This gave me a great idea for my classroom.
Using clay, my students could create themselves as they see themselves.
Superhero? Athlete? Investigator? Astronaut? Anything is possible. They can then build and design their worlds using additional clay figures and the tri-fold boards to create backgrounds before making stop-motion videos featuring their unique stories. My students with limited mobility can also use their imaginations to create their stories using action figures as their actors and actresses and the building blocks as their backgrounds.
Because I want to give my students time to build and tell their stories, they can save their pieces in the plastic cases. This way, their clay creations will not dry out before the story has been told.
Through this inclusive art project, each of my students will have a voice to represent themselves. They can be proud to be who they are and show others how they see themselves, without limits and with a story to tell.
