Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a third grade class of 27 fun-loving, active students who are hardworking and eager to succeed and learn. They struggle with social emotional skills and learning skills, but they work extra hard to achieve their goals with the support of their teachers and parents. Some of my students are one or two grade levels behind in reading and struggle with math fluency and other math skills.
My students sometimes have difficulty navigating social situations and would benefit from literature that focuses on social emotional learning.
Despite some of their struggles, they walk in every day with smiles on their faces, eager to learn and give everything they have. They motivate me to become a better teacher.
My Project
I strive to create a safe learning environment where every child is respected and appreciated for their unique gifts. Students are faced with many challenges in today's world and they need the social-emotional skills to handle those challenges. These books have been chosen carefully, focusing on social-emotional issues that my students may need to tackle in their lives. The students will have access to these books which will help engage the whole class in rich, social emotional conversations.
I want to empower my students to make positive choices, so these pictures books will be used in my third grade classroom to start conversations around social emotional learning.
Social-emotional skills are used in different social interactions and help manage every day emotional responses. They include things like social awareness, setting goals, taking responsibility for oneself, being able to work well with others, showing empathy and kindness, problem solving, being compassionate, regulating emotions and responding appropriately. It is imperative for children to learn social-emotional skills in order to maintain healthy relationships and practice self-care. Help me give my students social-emotional learning materials to help them identify their feelings, regulate their emotions, utilize coping strategies, solve conflicts, and build positive relationships. I love seeing my students excited and engaged in academic and social learning.
