This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My high school students come from diverse backgrounds in South Phoenix, Arizona - and with a diverse set of attitudes toward reading. As an English and Creative Writing teacher, it is pertinent that I give my students access to literature that not only represents a wide variety of types of writing but also reflects my students' cultural experiences as part of the Black and Latinx diasporas. My goal is to provide them with easier access to readings and games that cater to their unique cultural experiences. In the education world, this is often called culturally responsive teaching.

Students of color deserve the opportunity to broaden their perspectives, and to see their brilliance and genius in stories that mirror their own experiences.

With a robust classroom library, my students can more easily access and be inspired by these stories. As an instructor, I will be able to foster richer discussions and lessons regarding storytelling forms, cultural experiences, literacy, and language. For example, Jason Reynold's book "Long Way Down" is a great contemporary illustration of how compelling narrative can be told in verse. "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros tells the story of what it's like to be a young Latina girl in the United States. These two stories alone are ripe for literary engagement.

Additionally, I have chosen a few board games that are specific to Latin and Black culture - Loteria and Trivia for Us. The gamification of learning is an excellent way to build connections - intellectually and in the realm of classroom culture. Thank you for funding this Holiday/New Year gift to my beloved students! The books and games will be well-loved.
