This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The items that I am requesting are for our sensory room, which will be utilized by 42 students in our special education program. For those that don't know what a sensory room is, it is a designated area, which can support a student's sensory preferences and needs. Generally, it is an area or space that provides students with the sensory input they need to self-regulate, so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others. Sensory rooms can also promote learning by allowing students to work on motor skills and development of important language, math and other important skills.

Our goal is to build a sensory room that supports and meets our students' needs.

Without a functioning sensory room, our students have no proper area to relax or unwind when they are feeling overwhelmed. Everyone needs a break from a long day. Our students with special needs will appreciate the sensory toys and tools that I am requesting for them. For example, the trampoline is a favorite with our students. Unfortunately, the one that we had broke after being used by many students in our department. The small sensory toys are always great for a variety of things, such as leisure education, motor skills, enhanced focus/concentration. I am hoping after reading this, everyone will understand why a sensory room is so important and why we need to have it. We have a long ways to go to get a fully functioning sensory room, but this donation would greatly help us with getting a jumpstart.
