This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Grade 4 in a K-8 school located in an urban setting. Our students are enthusiastic learners who especially enjoy art, theater, and community building. They are supportive of each other and take pride in success. When asked to assist in activities such as raking leaves in the school yard or spring clean up of the playground on a Saturday, the number of students and parents who participate is inspiring.

Living in the northeast the students are exposed to the four seasons in all their glory and hardship.

After cold, snowy winters being cooped up inside, they are anxious to be outside as much as possible enjoying the warmth and joy of spring.

My Project

For a number of years our school's courtyard has suffered from neglect and overgrowth. Recently, staff members working together, cut the grass, trimmed the bushes and cleaned off paths restoring it to its original charm.

We would like our students and staff to have use of this garden area as a place for restorative practices, community building, science lessons and a quiet place to read and study.

Placing two picnic tables in the courtyard will allow greater comfort for the students to relax and chat with classmates and teachers.

Many of our students do not have a place to go to outside of school that is restful and calm. Responsibility will be instilled in the students as caretakers of the garden.
