My students need books that are accessible, engaging, and reflective of who they are.

My Students
I serve high school students in New Orleans, Louisiana. They are brilliant scholars who deserve a chance to delve into quality literature. In the past, they haven't had access to books that reflect their experiences while also challenging their thinking. Many of them haven't had opportunities to choose their own books in school. Rather, those books were chosen for them, books that weren't engaging or accessible and led them to dislike reading. I strongly believe that if I put the absolute best texts in front of them, they will develop a love for reading that will ultimately lead to their success in the classroom and beyond.
These students defy the odds every day.
In spite of a lack of resources, they still manage to grow in reading at an exponential rate compared to their peers across the state. They excel on state tests and their writing and comprehension skills have improved tremendously. They are proof that sheer will and determination can transform your life. They believe they can, so they will.
My Project
For this project, I chose books that will help students develop a lifelong love for reading. These books are both mirrors that reflect my students' experiences as well as windows that offer them a chance to see the world beyond what they are usually exposed to. As students find books that they love, they will inevitably want to read more and more books.
With a comprehensive school library, my students will be that much closer to bridging the opportunity gap that affects their lives on a daily basis.
At our high school, we believe that all of our students can and will graduate from college and go on to lead the world. In order to be world changers, they need to be proficient readers. Your donations will help to make their goals a reality.
