Our School's Identity Lending Library

Help me give my students in our school access to books and conversations about identity and systems of power and oppression.

My Students

My scholars attend a Distinct Special Education Program that serves students with moderate to severe learning disabilities. My scholars attend an urban, Title I school in the most diverse zipcode in the United States. This is my 9th year teaching in South Seattle but my 1st full year teaching in person at GHE and I feel so fortunate already.

This school is filled with brilliant scholars, families, educators and community members who work extremely hard to serve scholars furthest from educational justice.

My Project

This project is the start of an identity lending library for all educators in our school who serve scholars from Kindergarten to 5th Grade.

These materials are carefully selected books for educators to use to conversations around identity characteristics (race, melanin, ancestors, ethnicity, class, gender, age, ability, spirituality, etc.).

Our goal for this lending library is align our identity work through interactive read alouds and related activities throughout the grades. This alignment will strengthen the understanding of identity characteristics, intersectionality and how specific identities affect how some people have power and privilege and how others are oppressed.

One way we could use this lending library is to align the way we introduce and define each identity characteristic in kid-friendly language. For example, we could use the book, "Who Are You?" or "It Feels Good to Be Yourself" to introduce and deepen our understanding of gender, sex, and gender expression. We could define gender as "Your brain, your heart, and your body working together to choose the way you want to be a boy, a girl, both, neither, or something else."

The multiple copies of books in our lending library will allow for educators to use the same book at the same time. For example, if all Kindergarten educators read Isatou Ceesay's book at the same time, scholars across classes could have more opportunities to discuss her story, learn about Gambia, and the ancestors of their peers, etc. These conversations could be among peers or fellow Kindergarten educators in various school settings.

We are very excited to build our identity lending library and collaborate together. Thank you for reading about our project and we hope you consider supporting us!
