Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach approximately 350 students in grades K-6. My students are passionate about creating and performing music. Many of them share that music class is their favorite part of the school day. I often have to gently nudge them out the door when class is over, as they exclaim that they want to stay and have music class all day!
Magic happens in the music room every day, as students cross the threshold into a realm of creativity and personal expression.
For thirty minutes, my students experience the joy of singing, moving, and playing instruments. They thrive in becoming agents of their own learning, using music as a tool for self-expression and self-advocacy. Most of all, in the music room my students find a place where they belong, a place where their voices are acknowledged and welcomed.
My students have faced many challenges throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. They spent the majority of last school year attending music class online. During our time online, I observed how much my students value music in their lives. They often wanted to hang around after our class meeting was over, just to sing one more song or play one more game. Music class filled a void in their lives and allowed them to meet their social-emotional needs. Now that we are back in person, my students are hungry to create and consume live music. A new set of classroom instruments will provide my students with opportunities to create music that tells their personal stories. Our expanded classroom library of musical books, with a cast of characters from diverse backgrounds, will allow my students to see themselves as musicians. My students are so excited to once again fill the halls of our school with music!
