it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Recently, our school became a STEAM magnet school and we could not be more excited! Teachers work together in partnerships and teams to help students become lifelong learners. Our middle school students are mostly bused in from outside our neighborhood, and our population of almost five hundred students continues to thrive!
I work primarily with special needs students, but I also teach through the arts and help run the STEAM creation lab at my school.
Every student has a school issued tablet which we are learning to use in our learning.
We are a Title I school based on our families' financial levels, and every student is entitled to free lunch. We teachers work collaboratively very hard designing educational programs that have hands-on real-world applications, community-based lessons, and academic excellence, yet are fun as well.
My Project
Our students are moving into a new and larger STEAM lab or makerspace because we have outgrown our current space. Frequently students need to bind together items, and that is where they need safe cordless glue guns. We plan to make a glue gun station, but the problem is that there is limited space for students to work together and the risk of a student getting too close to another is something we need to solve. Hence, a glue gun station that has rechargeable glue guns and additional consumable glue sticks that always need to be replaced. Part of the middle school arts/theater curriculum includes set design and that involves teaching students how to safely use glue guns.
Our students use the lab to work on hands-on learning based projects for science, history, engineering, arts and math and need to learn how to safely use and store glue guns.
Our applied science programs include students making an (imaginary) virus, learning the parts and functions of cells, anatomy, and forensic sciences, all in the makerspace where we have these wonderful tools.
