My Students

I now teach 6th grade and I love the excitement these students still have for school. We are a Title I school so most of my students come from low-income households. My students often don't have exposure to many of the things that help them build background knowledge. I want to provide as many opportunities as I can to build their background knowledge.

Science is a perfect platform for building these experiences and fueling their excitement.

Our students need the lab skills practice but also the cooperation skills that come with working with other students.

My Project

Our school district is rolling out a new school choice program this year. In 6th grade, students will be learning about health careers. The test tubes will allow students to practice general lab activities and measurements.

In our planning with the high school we feed into, one of the main areas discussed that we can help our 6th grade students get prepared for the high school career academy is by practicing with lab equipment and taking measurements.

We have a unit on chemistry that will allow students many opportunities to practice measuring liquids and solids and then mixing them in the test tubes. We also have a unit on soils that would allow students to use the test tubes.
