At our school, our students have a voice and creative outlets. Our school is a separate, public day school which provides a special education program for students who range in age from three to twenty-one years. They have mild to severe cognitive deficits, physical barriers and many have multiple disabilities.
Classes are comprised of preschool students in the Preschool Educational Programs (PEP-Intensive Needs Class, Beginnings, Classic, and Collaborative), Pre-K, Head Start, and school-aged students five to twenty-one years old with severe to profound/multiple disabilities.
Instruction is based on the Voluntary State Curriculum, MCPS General Education Curriculum, and/or the Fundamental Life Skills Curriculum.
Our school adheres to the Success for Every Student philosophy to assure that each student maximizes his or her potential. Art, music, physical education, and media/library classes are provided to all of our students. Our class strives to create some of the most creative and fun activities you have ever seen in a classroom.
iPads have numerous communication and assistive technology applications that will help open up a new world for our students. Text to speech applications would make an immense impact on our student's ability to communicate to us and others.
Communicating can be a difficult prospect for many of our students and an iPad can help immeasurably in helping them express themselves and their ideas.
An iPad will offer students a portable easy to access way to communicate that can be put inside a protective case. Currently our students have to rely on cumbersome high contrast boards and voice output devices which are near impossible to use during travel even just to another classroom.
iPads also have a library of well polished math and reading applications that do not require the burdensome need for precise keyboard typing or the near impossible task of writing with a pencil.
