This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine hearing a four-year-old say, "Can I take an apple home? We don't have a lot of food in my house."

My students are growing up in an unsafe, extremely economically disadvantaged neighborhood.

As Pre-Kindergartners, this is their first experience in school. My students are learning to love school through our exciting hands-on, experience-based classroom. Unfortunately, my school is lacking tremendously in resources and funding, and we were provided with hardly any materials. Our classroom is truly our home, and my students do their best to take care of it. However, it can get very messy throughout the course of the day with all of the activities that happen in there. We eat breakfast, lunch, and snack in our classroom and food inevitably ends up on the floor. We use play dough, which often gets stuck in the carpet. We go out to the yard to play, and accidentally bring back dirt when we come inside. With three schools in our building and only one custodian during school hours, our classroom is not mopped nor vacuumed daily.

My Project

My students need cleaning supplies so that we can take care of our classroom and make sure that it is a healthy environment for learning. With a mop, my students will be able to clean the tile floor after we have had breakfast, lunch, and snack. My students can make sure that the carpet is a clean and comfortable place to sit for story-time if we have a vacuum to take care of it. If my students have access to paper towels, they can take ownership of a minor spill by cleaning it up themselves.

The materials requested in this project will drastically improve these students' experiences in school, by making sure that our classroom is always clean.

No child should have to learn in a dirty environment.
