This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach high poverty middle school students in a rural middle school the joy of science. My students are high-risk and differently-abled students who have overcome many obstacles in their lives. Many of them need extra attention and additional learning opportunities to completely grasp concepts in physical science.
Recently, we began teaching physical science in the 8th grade instead of the 6th. With this change, the course standards were elevated and the 6th grade physical science experience does not measure up anymore. Therefore the supplies used for 6th grade physical science are now antiquated. Our laboratory equipment and demonstration materials need a complete makeover to ensure that our students receive the best possible opportunity to learn those concepts that they will need to know to be successful after the 8th grade.
We will need a complete course set of laboratory materials and demonstration models. This set will enable our students to learn in the highest recommended way: through hands-on experiences.
With your help, these students will have an educational experience that they will remember throughout their lifetimes. Your small gesture will have a huge impact on their lives. It will not only encourage them to do well in school but also boost their self-esteem.
