Our Peaceful Classroom: Cooperative Groups

My students need narrow tables at two heights, woven floor cushions, and a small ottoman to create flexible seating arrangements to increase cooperation, tolerance, and understanding.

My Students

Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be a lot of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, which creates an extra layer of challenge.

My English Language Learner students are resilient, resourceful, and caring young teens.

Many of my students this year are recently arrived refugees from Africa and the Middle East. They tackle problems cheerfully and with gusto. These students face significant challenges, but they use their multiple talents and strengths to overcome obstacles.

My Project

Our refugee students have sometimes struggled to find a comfortable place in the larger school environment. I would like to create a comfortable and welcoming classroom environment in which cooperative learning groups encourage tolerance and acceptance of all our community members.

Like many teachers, I am ready to get rid of my large clunky teacher desk.

I would like to replace it with narrow tables at various heights and some flexible seating such as floor cushions and a small vinyl ottoman. Students will be able to gather together in comfort to learn and communicate. In a classroom built for collaborative learning, increased tolerance and acceptance of differences is, I hope, bound to follow.
