This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
All of 4th grade recently had an event in which a member of the public library came to visit the school while providing the opportunity for students to order library cards to browse from their collection while on campus. Our students adored this special treat and have continued asking when this event would occur again.
With this little library in our fourth grade wing, our scholars will have the opportunity to experience the magic of libraries (and develop an appreciation for reading) without the extra hassle of getting to a public library that is a distance away.
In addition, our own private little library would generate social-emotional growth--on top of the impact literacy development--as students practice sharing with one another, caring for the area and its books, holding discussions with one another for book recommendations, and creating an area where students can freely explore their imaginations.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and, of course, books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. However, not all students have the opportunity to freely visit public library buildings as they please due to a number of personal circumstances teachers might not be able to change, and so incorporating a little library within the building provides them with access in order to help in a different way! This little library will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create.
