Our Overworked Tables Need To Be Forced Into Retirement
My students need new tables in the Library that allow them to use devices & offer a more flexible table arrangement by allowing them to be moved out of the way for student centered projects.
Our Media Center is the heart of our school and is visited by every student each week. This is the one place that they can come take a break from the day to day monotony of being in the classroom. We want our students to look forward to coming to the Media Center throughout the day by offering a variety of learning opportunities.
Our school is a Title I school with most of our students being at or near the poverty level with more than 100 English Language Learners.
Our school is one of the oldest in our district with the library being added 22 years ago. Many of our students do not get to go anywhere other than school or home since many of them come from single income families where the parent works multiple jobs. Our school was on the states focus list the last two years and our students were able to turn that around by bridging the academic gap that had started. They were successful in securing our spot off of the states focus list for the current academic year. Our students are driven academically despite the many obstacles that they face every day.
My Project
The Media Center in our school is in desperate need of new more modern tables. We have a small Media Center that is currently not user friendly when it comes to our furniture. Our tables are outdated and overworked and take up most of the free space in our Media Center.
We are looking to transform our Media Center into a Learning Commons that would allow for STEM activities and project based learning to go on.
Tables that are easily movable and able to be stored will allow students to utilize the Media Center as more than just a place to sit, read and check out books. These tables will allow us to have STEM competitions, Spelling Bees and Whole Class Story time by opening up the space that is currently used for tables that are not movable.
