My students need high quality fiction and non-fiction children's literature to fill the shelves of our beautiful new library space!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Thom's classroom raised $2,120
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free," is a quote by Frederick Douglass. Students in our school can attest to this! One attribute that our students share is a love of reading and books; which is why it is so important to get high quality literature and nonfiction into their hands.
Imagine students walking through the hallway with their noses in a book--and the main problem we have is that they run into the person in front of them.
Then, upon arriving back at the classroom--students go crazy because the 3rd book in their favorite series has arrived and is on display! The students in my school are bibliomaniacs! I cannot keep up with their voracious reading. They consume books like other students consume candy. Our school is full of students in grades 4-8 who have a constant dialog about favorite authors, new books coming out, and the latest movies based on their favorite books. We even have a book blog created and maintained by students. Because our school is located in a large city within a high-poverty area and has a limited overall budget, students have not have the benefit of a school library until now. Thanks to the hard work of students, staff, and parents we have a physical space with new furniture! Now we need to to fill the bookshelves.
My Project
The books that will be purchased will be placed in our brand new library book space. Students at our school will do more than just read the titles that are purchased--they will CONSUME and RELISH them! There is a culture of reading at our school. Therefore, the majority of books in our small collection have been read. With these new titles, students will discuss the plots and characters of the fictional stories during breakfast and lunch. They will connect to both the people and places of their historical fiction and high interest non-fiction titles in their Social Studies and Science classes. They will use the engaging writing of their favorite authors to study author craft and use as mentor texts for their own writing. Readers will blog about their favorites on our school Bookitis Blog in an effort to inspire others to read high quality literature. They will create book commercials using our laptops to share with our community. They will continue to grow their reading lives!
This project will enable students to continue growing their reading lives!
It will put up-to-date and relevant fiction and non-fiction into their hands. The titles that will be received include award-winning fiction and high-interest non-fiction that students will be excited to read and share. In addition, there has been an effort to include a wide range of diverse characters, topics, and settings so that all students can ‘see’ themselves in the books they are reading.
