Missing. A twelve year old girl. Her room untouched except for a single shard of glass.
If this were a novel, you would want to keep reading.
My middle school students are no different. While they come from all walks of life, few can resist stories full of suspense and puzzles to solve. Unfortunately, the biggest mystery about mysteries is why they're so neglected in traditional English classrooms. My students have few options for these engaging page-turners without your help.
My Project
Mysteries provide an opportunity for students to practice much needed literacy skills. Tracking clues and characters across a text requires looking at details closely. Students must pay attention in order to think about cause and effect, character motivations, and general inferences. Mysteries also force students to ask why things are happening and make predictions about what will occur in the future.
Most importantly, mysteries value facts and intelligence in a time where this is not always the case.
I want my students to see characters who use their smarts to figure something out. These characters can be role models for perseverance and hard work.
