My students need art supplies to help create art for their museum and an iPad to help them explore, appreciate, and share their knowledge of artists throughout history.
The President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities has found, "decades of research shows strong and consistent links between high quality arts education and a wide range of educational outcomes." Art education is needed in order to have the skills necessary for success in a global environment.
My students attend a K-5 school in Louisiana that includes a total 844 students.
We are an "A" rated school that is resource poor. High stakes testing has been a huge focus for many years causing art education to be left behind. My 51 fourth grade students crave and need art education. These students will become art ambassadors for our school as they reach out to 800 kindergarteners through fifth graders sharing their art and the art of mater artists.
My Project
Infusing art into education will energize and motivate students to learn. The mission of this grant is to create a museum for teachers and students that focuses on master artists and student art. 4th grade students will use research skills to study an artist of the month. They will then use art techniques learned to create a masterpiece inspired by this artist (using paint, gum erasers, soap erasers, and canvas panels). Famous works of art by the artist of the month will be chosen and students will create QR codes (using an iPad) that will be framed and displayed around the campus along with their own artwork. The QR codes will include links to biographical information about the art and artists and links regarding the art techniques used. K- 5 teachers will be given suggested lessons that will infuse reading, social studies, and math with art as their students visit this art museum and use an iPad to access the information found in the QR codes.
High stakes testing should not mean that art education should be a thing of the past.
Art experiences create memorable, engaged learning. The school wide art museum created with this grant will inspire and foster creativity, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Integrating art education with technology and the Common Core Standards will prepare my students for the high stakes testing they will encounter and for the challenging jobs of the future.
