Our school is home to 431 students and their families. We serve students kindergarten through sixth grade and we are home to three G.O.A.L.S. (Goals, Objectives, Academics and Life Skills) classes which services students with special needs.
Within the heart of our school lies a courtyard which can be viewed from classroom windows.
This courtyard is home to the school's mascot, Viking, a three legged turtle. It also is home to frogs and birds. A mother duck has been known to lay her eggs in the courtyard as well. The courtyard was once landscaped and enjoyed by the staff and students of our school.
However, in recent years it has not been maintained, is overgrown and need of some TLC. It is the mission of the staff and students of our elementary school to provide the attention the courtyard needs in order to flourish once again and be a haven for all who visit the school. In addition to providing a peaceful, outdoor location, it has become the goal to make it engaging, interactive and educational by transforming the space into a multi-sensory garden.
We are requesting seeds, gloves, raised garden beds and more to create a multi-sensory garden which will provide experiences to touch, taste, smell, see and hear nature. Being located in the school's courtyard will lend itself to being a controlled and safe environment. This will allow the garden to meet all the diverse learning needs of those who come to experience the garden.
There are plans that go beyond the initial cleaning up, restoring and creation of the multi-sensory garden. These plans include expanding on nature based curriculum, joint service projects that include the elderly in a nearby assisted living community and the integration of arts and sciences with future added stations.
