Our Military Kids Need a MakerBot 3D Printer!

My students need a MakerBot Replicator Mini - 3D printer and a 10 pack of MakerBot PLA filaments for technology use.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Sumida's classroom raised $1,948

My Students

President Obama has said "3D printing has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything. " I'd like to challenge my military students to create models of what they are learning.

I am a teacher/librarian at an elementary school that services many Navy and Army families in Hawaii.

The library is the center of encouraging literacy on our Preschool-6th grade campus. About half of the students at my school are military dependents who move locations every three years.

My Project

My students investigate cultures and civilizations at all grade levels, usually resulting in a Powerpoint presentation or report. A MakerBot printer will allow students to design a pyramid in Ancient Egypt, a plantation home in Hawaii, and a Native American dwelling. Another popular project is brainstorming creative solutions to problems. Designing inventions that solve everyday needs and environmental issues is an important unit of study. A 3D printer will help create a model of their inventions to share. Finally, a 3D printer would be a valuable resource for science units where concepts can be abstract and difficult to understand. For example, students could create models of cells or the atomic structure of elements. I plan on working with a small group of students to pilot this technology and present their end products to the students, teachers, and parents of the school. I will collaborate with teachers to plan projects that will enrich and extend their learning in the classroom.

My school does not have a 3D printer at this time.

Funding this project will allow students to utilize this printer school-wide for future lessons and projects. Students will benefit from the hands-on creation of models and will be motivated to see their designs come to life. Projects using this printer will especially support the math, science, and social studies curriculum of the school.
