Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in Tampa Florida and our demographic is over 77% Hispanic. Many of our students have tough socioeconomic situations, as a result, we have over 95% of students on free and reduced lunch. A lot of our students come to America from other countries, so most of them don't speak English well. For many of them, band is a place to feel accepted and to find a group of friends that understand what they are going through. I feel Music is a universal language and a gift that I am trying to share with my students.
My Project
These students work hard every day, But most of the mouthpieces they are using to play their instruments are cheap knock-off brands or are damaged to the point where they don't work properly. We need each student to have their own mouthpiece to be successful. But with our students being in such rough socioeconomic statuses, it is nearly impossible for them to pay for all the items we need.
Please help me share the gift of music with my students, so they can share the gift later in life with someone else.
The mouthpieces listed will not even get one of our 3 groups fully outfitted. But this will definitely get us started, and hopefully, with more fundraising, we can get the whole band mouthpieces. This will help our students and their families tremendously. Some students have been playing on broken mouthpieces, simply because they do not have the means to get new ones. Mouthpieces are the most important part of a wind players instrument. Without a proper mouthpiece, or working mouthpiece, it is nearly impossible for students to produce corrects sounds, or feel successful playing their instrument.
