My students have been truly amazing! It's my fifth year teaching math but my first year with them and they have totally bought in to the classroom I dream to create. Many of them come from struggling, working class families dealing with the traumas of life and need something great to believe in. I want to help show them that they can make a difference in the world and have a voice in the type of life they create for themselves. They have touched me with constant yet subtle comments like saying one day, "Thanks." I looked blankly back at her "I used to hate math, but I'm warming up to it!" she says to me.
I'm inspired by the growth mindset and the groundbreaking brain research displaying the power of neuroplasticity.
I really encourage students to challenge themselves and work through moments of struggle as these are times when they can learn the most. We use low-floor high-ceiling engaging math activities where students get to discuss their learning much more than a traditional classroom. We have a vision for what we want our classroom to be, please help us get there!
My Project
I have constantly told the students I want to meet their individual needs and create a setting that is truly unique in the public school setting. They want cool chairs and different seating arrangements. They requested an area rug, a coffee table, and even a kitchen table setting.
I want to give my students the classroom we dream of.
I want them to be inspired by the room they come into and it would be much cooler if they knew their own desire got it for them. To be special they need to know others believe they are as well.
