Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a wonderful group of first grade students in a high poverty inner city public school in Indianapolis. My students are the sweetest first grade class ever!
My students attend an inner city school and receive free breakfast and lunch at school each day.
Many of our students' parents work odd hours and they barely get to spend time with their children. I have some students being raised by a single parent or a grandparent. No matter what my students are going through at home, they always try their personal best in the classroom.
Many students come from homes where it is difficult for their parents to meet their basic needs. Through Donors Choose I hope to be able to help fill their needs.
My Project
My students need to hear literature read to them out loud because many of them are ESL students and it helps with their reading and language skills. Listening to the book is a model of fluent reading that helps students become fluent readers themselves.
Having multiple copies of the books will allow many students to listen to the same book together.
This will give them the opportunity to discuss the story and answer any questions they may have with each other.
Having a variety of books for the students to choose keeps the students engaged in the listening station activity.
