Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second-grade teacher at a low-income school in Harlem, New York. The classroom library is the primary resource from which my students get to choose their reading books. It is where they are exposed to various genres, authors, and topics. It is also a nice and peaceful area where many students go to lie on the carpet and read. The library should be properly organized, labeled, and easily accessible. Students should be able to go to the library and find the book that they want without having to worry if one of the shelves is going to fall. However, our library is no longer like this. Our bookcases are not sturdy enough for our books and have been slowly deteriorating. I have had to discard one of our bookcases this year because one of the shelves continued to fall off and drop the books on the floor. Now another bookcase has broken and I do not have another place to display the books. I have requested two bookcases to replace these broken ones in my proposal, "Library: Part 1." However, I am requesting two additional bookcases for my library. The bookcases that remain are of the same material as the broken ones and are not far from falling apart. The bookcases we request are wider than the ones currently in the classroom and will provide more space for added genre baskets. Students will have more choice in their reading, and since these bookcases are of better quality, they will last in a classroom environment. My library needs help to regain its uniquely inviting nature. In addition, I am asking for a literacy bag. This bag includes a plush toy and book that students will alternate taking home to read and share with their family. This will encourage them to read at home and continue to reinforce the importance of reading.
