This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher at a low income school in Washington Heights, New York.
The classroom library is the primary resource from which my students get to choose their reading books. It is where they are exposed to various genres, authors, and topics. It is also a nice and peaceful area where many students go to lay on the carpet and read.
The library should be properly organized, labeled, and easily accessible. Students should be able to go to the library and find the book that they want without having to worry if one of the shelves is going to fall. However, this is what is occurring to our library. Our bookcases are not sturdy enough for our books and have been slowly deteriorating. I have had to discard one of our bookcases this year because one of the shelves continued to fall off and drop the books on the floor. Now another bookcase has broken and I do not have another place to display the books.
I am asking for two bookcases to replace the two that are broken. I know that having broken bookcases has affected the peacefulness of the library, and I am not confident of the safety of my students in the library with shelves and heavy books collapsing.
The bookcases we request are wider than the ones currently in the classroom and will provide more space for added genre baskets. Students will have more choice in their reading, and since these bookcases are of better quality they will last in a classroom environment.
My library needs help to gain back its uniquely inviting nature.
