Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my second grade classroom, students are encouraged to think out-of-the-box, to think creatively. I believe that it is my job to allow my students to feel comfortable enough to aim higher than their goals and reach for the stars!
Students at my school all come from low-income/poverty stricken families.
My school also services two shelters so many students are coming from that environment, as well. My students are excited second graders, ready to tackle whatever comes at them. However, most of my students go home to parents who don't speak English and work full time; therefore, they aren't able to help or support their children with their academics. I believe that it is my job to help my students foster a love and appreciation for reading so they can become successful students and successful individuals in today's society.
My Project
Reading Workshop takes place everyday in my second grade classroom for at least seventy-five minutes! Since many of my students are reading above grade level, we do not have the necessary books that my students need to continue growing as readers. My classroom currently has books on second grade level; however, most of my students are reading on third and fourth grade levels and I do not have the books to give them to read independently and advance their individual ELA needs.
This project will make such a difference to my students because these books and materials will help to improve my classroom library!
This project will also help my students become better, stronger readers. These materials will allow my students to read books at their individual reading levels, in accordance with the Common Core Learning Standards, and advance to higher reading levels!
