My Students

Our guitar program is beyond awesome. Our kids love the guitar. As a result they are writing songs, forming bands, learning tablature off the Internet, and basically impressing everyone that hears them. I am running to keep up with them as they develop into extraordinary musicians.

My students come from a wide range of socio-economic groups and cultures.

They are avid learners and not afraid to take on challenges. It's not unusual to hear a 3rd grade student teaching guitar licks to a 5th grader or vice versa. Our students testing scores rank with the top in our district. They get everything done they need to do and are always hungry for more. My job is to see to it that I provide the materials and instruction that satisfy their thirst for learning.

My Project

We have been fortunate over the past few months in acquiring instruments we needed to make a complete class set of instruments. The materials I am requesting now will help me maintain and store the instruments we have received. Guitar strings break and the drawer of replacements is down to a few odd strings. Guitar picks, as any guitarist can tell you, have a way of disappearing. We think they are where those missing socks are! Five of my students are playing Here Comes the Sun to accompany the chorus for our spring concert. We are currently using cheap elastic capos to play this part, that do not always fret the strings properly. A couple of the guitar cables we have are starting to short out. I have a very small teaching space and to make the guitars accessible I would like to hang five of them on the wall where students can easily get them.

When I came to this school five years ago, we started our guitar program and over the past two years I have watched it flourish.

Without neglecting their academic studies, I have watched students dedicate hours to guitar practice and and accomplish things I frankly couldn't have imagined. I am committed to doing everything I can to give my students every opportunity to grow into fine musicians and guitarists. This grant will help me in that quest.
