My students need storage units like the Closet Maid to hold their books and school supplies, and seating options such as the Surf Portable Lap Desks and Stack Stools to support Flexible Seating in our classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the last 20 years, I have promoted a library space in my classroom. This past year the project really took off with the incorporation of technology. My students are energetic, hard-working 4th-grade scholars with inquisitive minds. They attend a Title I elementary school in La Puente, California, about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The majority of them come from socioeconomically disadvantaged households, and over 96% are of Latino descent. In the comfort of this classroom setting, each of my students had the opportunity to do all subjects academic assignments, including reading, using a Chromebook, and student engagement sky-rocketed!
The ergonomics of this new learning arrangement in the classroom encouraged individuality, responsibility, and accountability.
Students felt empowered to turn in work at their own pace in a comfortable environment that fostered engagement. Flexible seating made a difference.
Next year I plan to venture more into flexible seating. This will be an expanded version of my small library space in my classroom. This great opportunity will challenge and motivate my students in their learning quest; it will also increase and stimulate their independence and decision-making skills.
My Project
Besides the benefits of enhancing student focus and engagement, being able to move in class and have options about sitting allows students to connect with each other promoting a sense of community; it also fosters responsibility and makes them accountable for their own learning and behavior choices.
Flexible seating is linked to higher academic performance.
I am a dynamic, fast-paced educator. When I introduce a concept, I want to make sure my students have plenty of opportunities to learn and check for understanding. Flexible seating will encourage my students to be more academically alert and mindful about their learning.
Since my students will not have traditional desks, they will need storage units like the Closet Maid to house their books and school supplies during class. They will relish having vibrant, unconventional seating alternatives such as the Surf Portable Lap desks, and the Norwood Stack Stools. The Dry Erase Clip Whiteboards will be a support for taking notes anywhere in the classroom. Giving students alternatives for their physical learning space nurtures their higher-order thinking skills and empowers them to be decision makers and problem solvers.
