My students need a 21st century classroom experience with modern tools. This iPad will be used critically as a resource in running small groups, working on projects, and guide students through the daily lessons.
At our school, we have a wonderful group of students faced with more than their share of challenges. Most students endure a bus ride of 12 miles out of urban Nashville to Joelton,a rural town north of the city. A Title I school, 100% of our students population qualifies for the free and reduced price lunch program.
Although our school and population experience systemic disadvantages, I am confident that with our dedicated team and amazing students, our school can reach its potential.
Currently, our school is among the lowest-performing in the state. Our school has a history of high teacher and principal turnover over the past several years. However, with the arrival of a new principal last year and many new teachers, including several Teach for America teachers, myself included--our school has already experienced significant growth in academics, behavior, and morale.
My Project
My students deserve to be engaged and excited about the skills they are mastering. I know that an iPad in my classroom will allow my students and I to leverage our currently unused Apple TV to bring more spark and passion for learning in the classroom.
Utilizing an iPad and an Apple TV (to which my school has no resources to connect), my students and I will be able to dramatically enhance our classroom experience.
In my humanities course, we will be able to use the iPad as a whole-class to project current student work, edit our work, take virtual field trips (especially important to our extended unit on conservation!). The new technology will also be used to run small group instruction with videos and guided lessons, like Khan Academy and NearPod, to increase achievement for students on varying levels. Furthermore, the iPad will allow me to easily log student behaviors in our behavior tracking system, Kickboard, and update grades in real-time. With this resource, I am confident that my classroom culture and student achievement will improve exponentially.
