My Students

We are a special education classroom. I teach 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. Most of our kiddos have been diagnosed with Autism. They have all been placed in my classroom because they need more support than they can get in a general education class or in a resource setting. They are very smart kids that just need patience, understanding, and a chance to move. Many of the students are working at grade level and with support are able to access the core materials. They struggle more with attention and social skills. We work in small groups and provide opportunities for sensory input. Our class writes their spelling words in shaving cream. We have fidgets to keep their hands busy. We have body socks to provide pressure when they are feeling overwhelmed. These students require a sensory diet in order to maintain focus and be successful in school. When provided the right tools these kids can do amazing things!

My Project

Covid has created a lot of stress for everyone. Many of my students are feeling this stress amplified due to anxiety that already accompanies the diagnosis of Autism. Sometimes they need a place to escape it all for a few minutes and express themselves artistically.

These materials will be used to set up an art station that students can step away from things and draw out their emotions.

At times, they lack the words needed to explain what they are feeling, but through drawing they are better able to communicate their needs.
