it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Debate is one of the most incredible academic opportunities! The problem is that it is also one of the most expensive! A debater requires a computer for research, writing, and notetaking. The problem is the vast majority of our students cannot afford their own computer.
Our school is typical of most public school debate teams.
We are located next to the Bronx jail where there is a daily line of inmates coming in and out. On the other side of the street is the criminal court where there is a daily line of criminal cases. The South Bronx is known more for poverty, crime, drugs, gangs, and failing schools than academic opportunities. However, our school six years ago started a debate team âÃÂÃÂ" the only school in the South Bronx with a debate team. It has grown to nearly 100 students from grades 7th-12th. Their academic abilities range from special education to valedictorian. Their background ranges from abuse, mental institutionalization to perfect attendance. Their behavior ranges from regularly suspended to model student. But they are all united by their passion and love for debating. They spend their days learning about debate, evenings in debate practice, weekends at debate tournaments and summers at debate camps. And this is just one such team!
My Project
Our debate competitors have laptops and iPads. Our students do not. We hope to partner with DonorsChoose to provide our students with best resources so they have access to every academic opportunity and there are no glass ceilings. Every student should be a Great Debater and every student should be treated like a Great Debater! With a laptop and e-reader our debaters can access the world, research any publication, learn to type, learn to write their speeches, and learn valuable notetaking skills. Additionally, our students can use their laptops and tablets in the classroom to read and type the world. Technology allows our students to access for free thousands of books, thousands of research publications, every app available from calculators to textbooks to language learning programs, internship, scholarship, and job opportunities. In our debate tournaments this is an educational necessity. In the college and career world - itâÂÂs an absolute necessity.
Debate is an incredible activity for students!
It teaches students valuable skills in public speaking, research, logic, argumentation, debate, reading, writing, note taking, and analysis. It teaches knowledge that is not covered in traditional schools and the "common core" - philosophy, political science, current events, economics, all the social sciences, critical theory, and a number of other subjects that the average student wont even hear until college! So please support our Great Debaters!
