Help me give my students the tools and materials needed to replenish and sustain our Global Garden. The shovels, soil, planters and the mulch will add to the success of our School Garden.
Our school, PS 63Q is proud to report that last year we started a Green team. This team of students and staff worked hard with the school community to create a Global Rainbow Garden and Outdoor Learning Space. PS 63 is a Title I school with students from diverse backgrounds. It has been a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate their leadership skills and act as role models for their peers. Our students are learning about the interactions among ecological systems and have been given the opportunity to cultivate responsibility for environmental stewardship. They have chosen plants from around the world to represent our diverse school community.
One of the Green Team’s goals this year is to expand our existing school garden, to teach fellow students about environmental sustainability.
So many students have shared stories of growing vegetables and gardens in their native country, but now many of their homes do not have the space for gardening. This project could give our students the necessary funding to expand on their learning opportunities and give the community a space to come together.
My Project
Our school is a Title 1 school, about 70% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Among the groups of students who will be working to sustain our Global Rainbow Garden are migrant students, limited English proficient students, students with disabilities, and at-risk students.
This project will provide hands-on, outdoor learning experiences where all of our students can thrive and feel successful.
"I love showing my friends how we grow vegetables in Columbia." "Let me show you how the roots support the plant so it can grow tall." Listening to the conversations and watching the students work together in our garden, is inspirational.
