Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It saddens me to see that my first graders are very uncomfortable in their classroom furniture. We first had small tables, with no place for books and supplies. We were promised furniture, which made us very happy. Then we became very disappointed when the furniture came. The hand me down desks, are open on all sides. We have cardboard boxes holding in our books. This does not work for us because things still fall out, all day long. Then the chairs are very old. The little girls with long hair continue to get their hair stuck in loose screws, that cannot be tightened. I put tape on the screws and on the dry splintered wooden chairs. This prevents the chairs from tangling long hair and giving the children splinters.The furniture is so mixed matched that some chairs are too big and some too small, not fitting under the desk the way it should. The children complain everyday. When incidents occur, it makes learning more difficult. They should really be more comfortable for learning. First grade is a very memorable time for learners. The children do many activities at their desks. They read books, discuss their stories, then write about each one. Illustrations are also made at their tables. When work is completed, we come together at our meeting area. We discuss our responses, share our writing and many new ideas. In September, I purchased two rugs, for our reading and meeting area. They are too small for our group of 26 children. We need a more comfortable rug for reading time and our class meetings. Expenses are beyond what I can afford for my eager learners. Please help these little ones light up to know that you care about them, while they learn.
