This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the days before we have computers, iPads and tablets? The world has changed so much with advanced technology updating every second. I want to provide the right tools to support my students so that they will be computer literate and have better chance to adapt in the 21st Century.
My First Grade students are from low economic status families with about 70% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Their families are immigrants from China. Most of their parents have minimal education and are blue-collar workers. English is their second language. My students did not get much exposure in reading in their earlier years due to parents' language barrier. School is the only place for them to improve their language skills.
Our school is a public school in California. We offer Spanish and Cantonese Bi-literacy classes for our K-5 grade students. We believe in improving students' thinking skills. We face many financial challenges every year. Our problems including raising funds to keep classroom teachers, purchasing daily school supplies, updating technology, and purchasing books for students to take home. It's been most exhausting raising funds just to get some basic needs to help my children to have a better learning environment with a variety of learning resources.
My Project
My students need three Samsung Galaxy 7" WiFi tablets and two tablet cases for protection so that these children can catch up with 21st century learning. The Samsung Galaxy Tablet features the most advance Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system at a reasonable price. These fast running 7" tablets are perfect for the hands of my young students to learn through watching educational video from YouTube for Education and access to thousands of applications such as Flashcards, Memory Trader and Google Books to help them build various skills. Not only will students find it much more exciting to learn with a tablet than a textbook and pen, but there are many apps and a lot of software designed for children to better understand the material. These tablets will help students to become familiar with the new Common Core assessments which require an online testing platform. With appropriate settings, using the Internet in the classroom is an excellent tool to teach children how to enter the digital age. Tablets give students the ability to take notes, do assignments and prepare classroom presentations in pairs, small groups and alone.
Embracing technology is my ultimate goal to lead my students to be the 21st Century Learners.
I hope you can help to support my First Grade Students to be the First in using Samsung Galaxy tablets to access to unlimited resources and knowledge through Internet and applications. The tablet cases will help to protect these devices from multiple usage among children. My students deserve the opportunity to race with today's technology providing they have the right learning tools and your support!
