This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Black Hair Expo, hosted by a group of passionate and dedicated students, is a celebration of the diverse and rich beauty of Black hair. These students recognize the importance of fostering a sense of pride and appreciation for the unique textures, styles, and cultural significance of Black hair. In a world where Eurocentric beauty standards have often marginalized and stigmatized natural Black hair, these students are determined to create a platform that promotes inclusivity and self-love. The expo serves as an educational space, offering workshops, panel discussions, and demonstrations that empower attendees to embrace and celebrate their natural hair while dispelling harmful myths and stereotypes.

In this program, students will embark on a comprehensive journey encompassing various skills and knowledge areas.

The curriculum not only focuses on practical aspects like crafting shea butters and hair oils but also emphasizes the importance of precision through accurate measurements. Beyond the realm of product development, participants will delve into the intricacies of advertising, learning how to effectively market their creations. Additionally, students will receive training in event planning with the goal of orchestrating a grand-scale expo catering to over 200 students.

The learning process is structured to involve regular meetings, occurring twice a month and extending into after-school sessions. During these gatherings, students will actively engage in hands-on activities, honing their skills in product development while simultaneously gaining insights into the logistics of organizing a large-scale event. The emphasis on accurate measurements ensures the quality and consistency of their products, contributing to a professional standard.

What sets these students apart is their distinctive commitment to addressing not just the superficial aspects of their creations but also the profound historical and societal implications related to Black hair. Their passion is rooted in a determination to challenge norms, dismantle stereotypes, and foster a community.
