My Students

Our school serves a diverse urban population of second language learners from low-income families. Some are visual and aural learners; others are kinesthetic and tactile learners who thrive on interactions with the physical world.

The educational and developmental benefits of exercise and movement are myriad.

Not only do PE and recess help build strong bodies and minds, but the kickball diamond and soccer field are also places to build teamwork and social kills. Of course, the occasional scrape or bump is par for the course, and for the most part, my students roll with the punches, but now our first aid kit is nearly empty!

My Project

With no more money in this year's budget, teachers must pay for bandaids and icepacks out of pocket. We're down to a single icepack, and the mini-fridge where it is kept is on its last legs, unable to close completely and constantly leaking onto our classroom floor, creating an ever-present puddle kids must step around.

It is sometimes a struggle for my students' families to cover basic necessities and I don't want to add dwindling first-aid supplies to their list of worries.
