My Students

I am a speech and language therapist in a Title I school in Boston. My students are 3-9 years old with diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorders. My students are in self-contained classrooms and receive special education services through their Individualized Education Programs (IEP), including speech and language therapy.

We are a unique school located in the heart of a low-income, diverse, and supportive community.

Within our school, we have 17 self-contained classrooms for students with autism (pre-school through 8th grade) as well as a large general education program. My students have a range of skills and abilities; some are learning early communication skills such as requesting items and building their vocabulary using either their voice or augmentative alternative communication. Others are working on high level social skills and comprehension. My students are wonderful, hardworking children who are excited and motivated to learn! When given the proper tools and support, it is truly amazing to see them communicate!

My Project

My students are seen for speech and language therapy in their classrooms and also in pull-out sessions in our speech therapy room. Currently, we do not have age-appropriate seating for our youngest students in our speech therapy room. With our current furniture, their feet do not touch the floor, making it difficult for them to focus on table-top activities and participate in their sessions. The cube chairs I am requesting provide more stability, lower height, and a defined work space. Additionally, the option to use the tray with the cube chair allows for directed table-top work. These supplies will help my students become more engaged in their therapy sessions, allowing them to reach their full potential!

Because my students have varying and unique needs, adapted materials are necessary for them to access classroom learning.

Many of my early childhood students are non-verbal and are learning to use pictures to communicate their basic wants and needs. I create an individualized communication book for each student that they are able to use throughout the day. I also make many materials to use during my therapy sessions including adapted children's stories. Many of my students have difficulty attending to story books so I often simplify the text and add additional pictures to improve their ability to attend to books and comprehend the content. Projects such as the communication books and adapted stories require materials that are not readily available in my school including a binding machine and a large laminator. I am requesting these items so that I can more quickly and efficiently create needed materials for my students.
