I teach kindergarten in a Title I school. Title I refers to the socioeconomic level of the students who attend - our students come from a low socioeconomic background. Some of our students live in low income housing, while others live in hotels and are considered homeless. All of our students receive free breakfast. Our guidance counselor helps us provide for our students who are in need, with food for the weekend, jackets, shoes, book bags, school supplies, and much more.
It is important that my classroom provides a warm and welcome space for all of my students and their families.
Many of my students have never been in a school before and to help them learn to their fullest potential it is my job to make them feel comfortable and confident in their abilities. I am a firm believer for that to be done there needs to be a relationship between home and school. The resources I am asking for are to help make my classroom a place where both the students and their families can start a positive school experience.
My Project
I have taught preschool and kindergarten the past 10 years, and 8 of those years I have had a book display. Recently I moved into a classroom that did not have a place to highlight books and I felt like the students were not as excited to find something to independently read.
The younger kids are when they foster their love of reading, the more they will enjoy it as they get older.
The previous sentence is something I truly believe in. By having a book display I can show the students my favorite books, and they can also share their favorites with the rest of the class. I have seen when people share their interests they can inspire others, and if I can help instill a love of reading in kindergarteners I know it will stay with them, and hopefully help make the rest of educational experience a positive one.
