Students come to kindergarten with a wide array of background knowledge. My job as their teacher is not only to teach them the standards, but also to help shape them into responsible, independent, respectful, and well-rounded individuals (who of course have a love for learning). Classroom mailboxes can help shape students. They teach the students responsibility and independence by putting their work in the correct space as well as keeping their mailbox tidy, and they teach respectfulness by making sure the students are know the value of someone else's personal space. All of those traits combined help the students become well-rounded individuals. Of course a mailbox can also help teach the kindergarten objectives as well, by showing the students' names they are able to learn letters (both capital and lowercase), word discrimination (names), alphabetical order (if the names are in order), counting (by counting the letters in the names), and much more. Overall, getting the opportunity to have student mailboxes in my classroom would be beneficial both socially and academically for my students.
