My Students

I have twenty-four students in my fifth grade classroom. Because of the make up of my school and the classroom setting, I have a mix of English language learners, and students who receive services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Some of these students are English language learners with services.

Fifth grade is one of the first years where students begin to find their identity, enter into another social and emotional level, and truly begin their road to independence as they prepare for middle school and high school.

One third of my school's population are English language learners, so not only do they need to learn the content and build their foundational skills, they also need to acquire the language to help them meet the standards. Along with that, they also need to start acquiring computer/technology basic skills such as knowing how to maneuver through different apps and websites and learning and using their keyboarding skills. Along with this, the students will be surfing the web and learning how to target their searches to help them with their research projects.

My Project

These book titles were chosen with my class based on their interests, favorite authors, series, and stories so far.

My class loves to read, but we do lack books by some of their favorite authors from their years as a reader so far.

These include Roald Dahl, Louis Sachar, Suzanne Collins, and Dan Gutman... to name a few.

With these new additions to our class library, they will have easy access to expand and study the works of their favorite authors and characters and use their imagination to travel through time with their well-loved characters. They'll be able to see how they grow and learn some life lessons from the themes of these on grade level books.
